One of Fleetwood Town’s new faces, Dean Howell, reflected on Saturday’s defeat to Blackburn Rovers at the Crown Ground.

He admitted it was a good workout against a strong Championship side, the perfect preparation for the new season. He said: “They had some good players and that is obviously what you expect. They’ve just dropped down to the Championship so we knew it’d be a good test and that was the main point of getting a friendly against quality opposition, to see where we are as a team and as individuals.” With the opposition boasting players of the calibre of Nuno Gomes and Danny Murphy, Howell was delighted that Town had the opportunity to find out what is working on the pitch against such quality early on: “It’s pre-season so nothing is at stake. There is no real pressure regarding points, but you want to put in a good performance against the opposition and pre-season is all about bonding as a team. The manager is trying things out and the new players and old players are getting to know each other.” The experienced Howell was Town’s third signing back in May, after he helped Crawley to secure back to back promotions, making him a vital addition to Mellon’s squad ahead of the league campaign. After the recent trip to Austria, he is settling in well with his new team mates: “The lads have been great here, they’ve made me welcome. It is difficult coming to a new side but everyone’s been great. It’s exciting and the gaffer’s brought in some good additions to add to the success that they had last season”, he said. “So hopefully we can all gel together and have a good season.”
