Report: Under-18s heartbroken after last minute loss to Birmingham

13 November 2023

Fleetwood Town’s Under-18s fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat to Birmingham City at Poolfoot Farm on Saturday morning after conceding with seconds to go.

It was a slow start to the game, with both sides not managing to create many chances in the first half, and that was the case until Birmingham opened the scoring to add a bit of urgency to Mark Yeates’ young Cods at the training complex.

Town had a great chance to bring the game back to level terms early in the second half as Under-16 Leo Thompson showed his pace down the left as he ran straight past the right-back before playing a low ball across the face of goal for Harvey Currie, who couldn’t connect at the back post.

The equaliser came in the last 10 minutes of the game as forwards Mikey Lane and Dom Richmond linked up in the final third with the former picking out the latter with a through ball before Richmond slotted the ball under the keeper to make it 1-1.

Unfortunately, the action didn’t end there and it benefitted the events in added time as they put themselves back into the lead with little to no time left in the game meaning the chance for a comeback was minimal.

The Under-18s will want to put this result right in their next clash which is another home one against Wigan Athletic at Poolfoot Farm on Tuesday 14 November (11am kick-off.)

Town XI: Bellizia (GK), Cirino, Butterworth, Haughey, Thompson, Smith, Namputu (Fletcher 45’), Doherty, Richmond (Currie 67’), Lane, Daha.

Unused subs: Woodward (GK), Slater, Stansfield.
