Report: Under-18s fall to a narrow defeat in Wigan

20 March 2024

Fleetwood Town’s Under-18s’ winning streak in the Professional Development League came to an end on Tuesday morning as they fell to a last-minute 1-0 loss to Wigan Athletic at Christopher Park.

Our young Cods started the game well working a few good chances in the first half, testing the goalkeeper on a couple of occasions, but the score line would stay level until the break at half-time. The best chances of the opening period started with good work from David Animasaun and Reece Wilkes in the midfield, with Hermann Daha being played in soon after, but his shot was saved.

A solo chance from midfielder Rylee Wilkinson followed this, with his effort flying high and wide of the target, and substitute Theo Butterworth – who came on from the recently recovered Kayden Hughes – worked a brilliant chance from a Daha corner after the break but, yet again, the man between the Tics’ sticks was a match for the effort.

15-year-old Sam Kendrick was then introduced to the game, having stepped up a few age groups, and probably had Fleetwood’s best chance of the game, but it was the hosts who managed to take advantage of the close nature of the game as they broke the deadlock later on in the clash and finished the game strong, keeping all three points in Greater Manchester.

Mark Yeates’ side will be hoping to take the positives from the game and will want to get back to winning ways this Saturday as they are set to take on Bristol City in another league clash, this time at the Robins High Performance Centre (11am kick-off).

Town XI: Bellizia (GK), Ruocco (Eccles 65’), Jake Doherty, Fletcher, Hughes (C) (Butterworth 65’), Slater, Trialist (Thompson 57’), Wilkinson, Animsaun, Wilkes (Kendrick 85’), Daha.
