Report: Six straight league wins for our Under-18s after beating the Owls

14 March 2024

Fleetwood Town’s Under-18s carried on their brilliant form of late on Tuesday as they managed to do the double over Sheffield Wednesday after beating them 1-0 at Poolfoot Farm.

Mark Yeates’ side almost has a perfect record from their last nine games in all competitions as they have won eight of them and are currently on a six-game win streak in the Professional Development League after the result this week.

This game saw few chances be created, as most of the play took place in the midfield, with the best chance of the first half falling to left-winger Liam Roberts who worked a yard of space from his marker and tried to find the top left corner with his strike from range, but it went high and wide of the target.

The battle continued throughout the game, but it wasn’t until the 92nd minute of the clash that the deadlock was broken, and it was by Under-15 midfielder Reece Wilkes, who is fresh off an England call-up where he scored against Scotland last month.

Two substitutes linked up for the Town goal as David Animasaun picked up the ball on the wing, after being subbed on for Roberts earlier in the game, and decided to drive at the full-back, easily beating him. The run just seemed to go all the way before he decided to pull it back to Wilkes in the box, who tapped it home.

With four games in hand and a packed schedule yet to come, our Under-18s could rise to the heights of second in the PDL this season, with their next game coming up on Saturday 16 March against Coventry City (1pm kick-off).

Town XI: Woodward (GK), Cirino (Hughes 60’), Jake Doherty, Fletcher, Butterworth (C), Slater, Richmond, Jack Doherty, Daha (Wilkes 65’), Smith (McLean 73’), Roberts (Animasaun 60’).
