Report: Under-18s come back from behind to beat Wigan

15 February 2024

Fleetwood Town’s Under-18s came away winners from their latest Professional Development League fixture after beating Wigan Athletic 2-1 at Poolfoot Farm on Tuesday morning.

The game had few chances between the two sides, with the first real one coming in the 20th minute when Liam Roberts picked up the ball just inside the opposition’s area and decided to try his luck, forcing a save out of the goalkeeper, who parried the effort into the path of the Trialist, but he fired wide of the mark.

That was all the action for the first half, as most of the action came after the break. Dom Richmond fired the next chance wide from range around the hour mark, but then the young Cods fell behind in the clash when a Wigan forward smashed in a shot from 20 yards to break the deadlock on the day,

This seemed to light a fire in Mark Yeates’ side as they netted two late goals to flip the score on its head. Wigan’s lead lasted just three minutes as Town pulled it back to 1-1 in the 84th minute when Roberts played in a free kick towards the head of David Animasaun, who pressured his marker to head into his own net.

Not long after, it was Animasaun on the end of another attack, this time getting the goal for himself. Richmond started the move on the right, who then played a deep cross to Roberts at the back post, who nodded back across to the forward off the bench, who was left alone to tap in the winner seconds before the final whistle.

With another three points in the books for the Under-18s, all focus now shifts to the weekend when they travel to Yorkshire to face Hull City at their training ground on Saturday morning (11am kick-off).

Town XI: Bellizia (GK), Cirino, Elmore, Smith (Wilkinson 82’), Eccles, Butterworth (C), Richmond, Fletcher, Trialist (Animasaun 65’), Daha, Roberts.
