CHELTENHAM TOWN

The Robins have struggled this season, and with the recent run of results, they sacked their former manager Wade Elliott and named his replaced last week, Darrell Clarke - who fans may know from his time at Bristol Rovers. The 45-year-old  was most recently in charge at Port Vale and becomes Cheltenham's 12th permanent Football League manager.

Darrell enjoyed an 18-year playing career as a midfielder with the likes of Mansfield Town, Hartlepool United and Salisbury City before moving into management at the Wiltshire outfit The new Robins boss has signed a two-year-deal at the Completely-Suzuki Stadium.

When looking at their form, Cheltenham Town have yet to score a goal in the league after ten games played. The Robins opened their campaign with a 1-0 defeat away at Shrewsbury Town, followed by a 3-0 home defeat to Bolton Wanderers in the middle of August.

In the twelve games played (in all competitions), they have conceded 23 goals and have scored one - which was an own goal in the EFL Trophy encounter at Bristol Rovers. In their last game, Lincoln won 2-0 on home soil.

With a new manager in the dugout for the game against Fleetwood, will he be able to change their fortunes sooner rather than later?

WHAT THE MANAGER HAD TO SAY REGARDING THE GAME

Fleetwood Town boss spoke to the local press after Saturday’s win over Leyton Orient, saying he was pleased with the defensive side of the team, but also how happy he was that his side was clinical when chances came…

"I can't remember many big saves or chances that Lynch has had to make a decent save for, so I have no what-ifs about our defending side at all, I think Ben Heneghan has been fantastic for us and he's offered us some organisation at the back where it’s also great to have Josh Earl back because he's a big player, a top player at this level.

"All these moments like the players coming back from injury offer positive results just like today - you have to blend football teams, partnerships are really important, you could be old and have a mobility history but if you have someone young beside you it's a decent balance.

"Today we had some big players in the team, some left footers, sharp players and then we all know we are nowhere near finished, we're miles off where we can be, and we should see that really exciting moving forward because that is a positive for us."

On being clinical...

"They delivered some dangerous crosses and were dangerous in the wide areas but we managed to get our foot on it and protected our areas, we also countered well, there were two or three big opportunities as they threw caution to the wind on the counter-attack where the lads could definitely have finished them off because then I could have enjoyed that final ten minutes more than I did.

"They had some half chances today, once we started pressing and we got to the front foot that's when our qualities come out because there are some quality players in our dressing room."

Match Reports

Report: Town make it two wins in a row after beating Cheltenham

3 October 2023

Fleetwood Town made it two wins in a row as they managed to put two past Cheltenham Town at the Completely-Suzuki Stadium on Tuesday evening.

It was another brilliant performance from Lee Johnson’s men as Junior Quitirna opened the scoring in the first half with a brilliant free-kick before Jack Marriott’s close-range shot doubled the lead and secured the points for Town on the road.

The first chance of the game came soon after the first whistle as Ben Heneghan rose highest to meet Quitirna’s corner in the third minute, but the effort went wide of the far post.

Then, it was the hosts’ turn to have a chance of their own as Jovan Malcolm span around his marker inside the Fleetwood box before firing on goal and hitting the post in the process – captain Sean Long was there for the rebound, but he struck wide of the mark.

End-to-end football was on the cards after that as not only did Malcolm force a low save from Jay Lynch, but Town managed some intricate play of their own as Jack Marriott found Ryan Broom, who fed the ball to Promise Omochere, but his effort was blocked.

The deadlock was broken 20 minutes in, and it was a moment of brilliance, once again from Quitirna, as he took control of a free-kick just outside the Robins’ area and whipped it inside the near post, beating the diving Luke Southwood in the process to make it 1-0 to the Cods.

Chances after this were at a premium until the break with a key one for Cheltenham being worked down the right before the half-hour mark as Long picked out Rob Street inside the box, whose header was powerful but had no direction as it flew wide of the near post.

With not much more happening, the players made their way into the dressing rooms for a half-time team talk before the second half, which was kicked off by Fleetwood, who had the first chance of the second period as Marriott fired over the crossbar five minutes in.

Both sides had a decent half-chance around the hour mark as Davies nodded an effort on target from a corner for the hosts, that didn’t trouble Lynch, with Bosun Lawal trying an acrobatic effort after a free-kick a couple of minutes later, which went just over the bar.

A horror tackle shocked all in the Completely-Suzuki Stadium as Broom turned Curtis Davies inside the Fleetwood half before the defender slid in late and over the ball into the winger, forcing the referee to brandish a red card 20 minutes from time.

Lee Johnson’s side doubled their lead with not long to go as substitute Jayden Stockley forced a diving save from Southwood with his initial effort, and hit the crossbar with his second, but luckily for Town, Marriott was there to clean things up and poke from a yard out.

There wasn’t much action left in the game as half-chances from Quitirna, Broom, and Stockley never really troubled Southwood in his goal, but it was another good day in the office for the side from the Fylde Coast on the road!

Robins XI: Southwood (GK), Long (C), Bevan (Peupion 56’), Freestone, Sercombe, Street (Keena 72’), Thompson (Hammond 66’), Ferry (Williams 72’), Bonds, Malcolm (Goodwin 72’), Davies.

Unused subs: Harris (GK), Smith.

Town XI: Lynch (GK), Lawal, Robertson, Vela (C), Broom, Marriott (Simons 86’), Quitirna, Heneghan (Holgate 82’), Omochere (Stockley 76’), Nsiala, Earl.

Unused subs: McMullan (GK), Tshimanga, Graydon, Patterson.
