Fleetwood Town fell to a 3-0 defeat to Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium on Tuesday evening in their latest Sky Bet League One outing.
Town looked strong in the opening stages of the game, creating multiple chances which tested Sam Tickle between the Wigan sticks, but goals from Jordan Jones, Sean Clare, and Tom Pearce put the game out of reach for the travelling Cods.
The hosts made a quickfire start when a searching ball in behind had Jones racing away towards goal, as the winger calmly slotted into the corner to open the scoring.
Defender Ben Heneghan then swapped defence for attack and almost equalised, heading narrowly wide of the post from an inviting Phoenix Patterson delivery, before also striking a volley that had to be tipped over.
After conceding early, Fleetwood was in the driving seat now and after some great pressing from Marriott, Ryan Broom fired low towards the bottom corner - forcing Sam Tickle into a brilliant diving save.
The hosts had struggled to create anything clear-cut after scoring early, but they soon doubled their tally when Sean Clare arrived on cue to fire Humphrys low cross at Lynch and in - ultimately going down as an own goal.
As half-time beckoned, Lynch produced an excellent save to deny Jones from point-blank range before defender Josh Earl looked to have been tripped inside the Wigan penalty area, but he was soon shown a second yellow card for simulation.
Down to ten at half-time, it was an uphill battle from here for Town, and after a quiet 20 minutes, Pearce curled in a free-kick to further bridge the gap between the two sides.
But there was a sweet moment for academy graduate Cian Hayes, who came on as a substitute after returning from his loan spell at Rochdale earlier today - having scored a wondergoal at the weekend.
Despite both sides making various changes, the game lost its tempo after Wigan’s third, with the hosts mustering up a number of half chances before finishing on a 3-0 victory.
