PETERBOROUGH UNITED

The visitors to Highbury currently sit 4th in Sky Bet League One on 38 points after 20 games. Peterborough United have won seven matches at home and have picked up three points four times on their travels, and they'll be looking to make it five this weekend on the Fylde Coast.

Head coach Darren Ferguson saw his side demolish fellow promotion hopefuls Oxford United at the Weston Holmes Stadium. First half goals from Hector Kyprianou and Ricky-Jade Jones gave Posh the lead at the break, with Ryan De Havilland scoring in the 90th minute to seal three vital points.

In their last league match on the road, Posh drew 2-2 with surprise package, Stevenage. The hosts were two goals to the good at the break, however goals from Joel Randall and Ricky-Jade Jones helped them earn a valuable point with their strikes in the second half.

The player for the Cod Army to watch is Kwame Poku. The tricky winger has scored eight goals in 26 appearances this season, and has been the one to watch for Posh this season. With fellow teammate Ephron Mason-Clarke also scoring seven in the league, with three goals in the cup competitions. Poku - a Ghanian international - started his career off at Colchester and after three years at the Club, he made the switch to Peterborough and the 22-year-old hasn't looked back.

A LOOK BACK AT ONE OF THE FIXTURES AGAINST PETERBOROUGH

Back in August 2019, Fleetwood Town made the long trip down to Cambridgeshire to take on Peterborough United on the opening day of the 2019/20 season. Then head coach, Joey Barton helped guide his side to a 3-1 away win at the Weston Holmes Stadium, with fans' favourite Harry Souttar scoring four minutes into the game from a corner.

Forward Josh Morris made it two moment later with a lovely chip over the Posh keeper. The hosts pushed and pushed to get back into the game, but it was Danny Andrew's second half free-kick from 25-yards that sealed the win and three points to see Town top of the league standings.

Match Reports

Report: Town defeated by Peterborough on home turf

16 December 2023

Fleetwood Town returned to Highbury action on Saturday afternoon but fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Peterborough United.

Even though Town created numerous second-half chances, Lee Johnson’s side was unable to earn themselves a share of the spoils, with Archie Collins' deflected first-half effort proving decisive to earn the Posh all three points.

The away side gave Fleetwood food for thought inside the opening period when Hector Kyprianou headed onto the post, with Jay Lynch needing to be called into action moments later as he stopped a rasping strike from Kwame Poku.

It wasn’t quite backs against the wall for Fleetwood, but when the Posh continued to display their early signs of attacking intent, Town were defending resolutely inside the area to keep the scores level.

Having had to contend with early defensive duties, Fleetwood soon produced a good chance of their own, when Jayden Stockley teed up Jack Marriott inside the penalty area, but the striker just couldn’t apply the finishing touch.

But, for all Town’s great defensive work, they were made to pay when Collins unleashed a deflected long-range effort into the bottom corner, wrong-footing just before half-time.

Just after the interval, Lynch was on hand to produce another spectacular save, flying across his goal-line to deny Ricky-Jade Jones’ header from point-blank range.

As the second-half wind began to pick up, substitute Maleace Asamoah unleashed an exquisite curling strike towards the top corner, forcing Nicholas Bilokapic into a wonderful save.

A penalty box scramble followed as Lee Johnson’s men edged closer to an equaliser with an inspiring second-half display, with Brendan Wiredu next to come close from inside the area.

Town’s bench included a range of Academy graduates and former development squad personnel, all of whom have earned themselves valuable minutes this season. A pleasing pathway that future talent will look to follow.

In fact, the substitutes made an impressive second-half impact, with a strong performance from Asamoah driving forward much of Fleetwood’s attacking play. The Cods huffed and puffed, with substitute Hayes next to see himself denied.

Having put in a spirited second-half display, Lee Johnson’s men must have felt they were good value for a point, and somehow didn’t score when Ben Heneghan’s header crashed into Bilokapic, who made an excellent reflex stop late on to earn the Posh all three points.

Town XI: Lynch (GK), Johnston, Wiredu, Lawal, Vela (C) (Dolan 70’), Stockley, Broom (Asamoah 60’), Marriott (Hayes 79’), Heneghan, Earl, Patterson.

Subs not used: McMullan (GK), Holgate, Teale, Armstrong.

Posh XI: Bilokapic (GK), Burrows, Edwards, Knight, Mason-Clark, Poku (Ajiboye 90’), Randall (De Havilland 83’), Jade Jones (Mothersille 90’), Kyprianou, Collins, Kioso (C).

Subs not used: Talley (GK), Katongo, Crichlow, Clarke-Harris.
