Report: Town exit the Bristol Street Motors Trophy after defeat to Derby

5 December 2023

Fleetwood Town exit the Bristol Street Motors Trophy following a 3-0 defeat to Derby County at Pride Park.

Heading into the fixture after three successive defeats, Lee Johnson’s side were looking to get back to winning ways, but it wasn't to be as one goal in the first half and two in the second half sealed the win for the fellow League One side.

Derby started off the quickest of the two sides and it was Northern Ireland goalkeeper Stephen McMullan who was called into action first. He pulled off a superb save after 15 minutes after a fiercely whipped in Derby County corner saw James Collins almost open the scoring.

On 25-minute mark, Collins had another chance and this time he took it. Martyn Waghorn whipped in a corner and it was cleared as far as Conor Hourihane on the edge of the box. He struck it back into the danger area before Derby's No.9 stuck out a leg to give the host the lead.

Adam Montgomery almost equalised for the visitors as he got in behind the Rams defence, but goalkeeper Josh Vickers was out quick to make himself big and keep the hosts in the lead.

Johnson’s men started the second half positively with Bosun Lawal having a strike from outside of the box, then Jack Marriot went close but his effort was headed narrowly wide

Town keeper McMullan made a number of impressive saves to keep the score line at 1-0, but Collins doubled his tally in the 76th minute. Joe Ward delivered a free-kick into the box for the forward to head home and all but seal victory for Paul Warne's side.

With minutes remaining, the Rams made it three and sealed their place in the Round of 16 of the Bristol Street Motors Trophy after substitute Tyreece John-Jules fired a low strike past McMullan.

Derby XI: Vickers (GK), Wilson (Nelson, 83')), Forsyth, Hourihane (C) (Fapetu, 87'), Bradley, Cashin, Barkhuizen (John-Jules, 75'), Bird, Collins (Weston, 83), Waghorn (Mendez-Laing, 67'), Ward.

Unused Subs: Wildsmith (GK), Brown.

Town XI: McMullan (GK), Montgomery (Johnston, 63'), Wiredu (Hayes, 69'), Lawal, Tshimanga, Broom (Vela, 63'), Marriott (Stockley, 69')), Heneghan, Dolan (Mayor, 17'), Earl, Patterson.

Unused Subs: Lynch (GK), Holgate.
