Head coach Charlie Adam looked ahead to this weekend’s Sky Bet League One clash against league leaders Portsmouth on Thursday afternoon and told the media it’s a challenge he is relishing.

The Cods have been making improvements week-on-week since the arrival of Adam as the club’s head coach and the players and staff as a whole will be hoping to push that one step further on Saturday when Pompey travel to Highbury in a first versus last league battle.

Here’s what Charlie said ahead of the game:

On the challenge ahead at the weekend…

“It’s going to be a great test against the top of the league; John’s done a great job with them, which will be a big challenge for us, but it’s one that we are relishing. The disappointment of last week has gone, we’ve moved on now and we want to put on a performance when Portsmouth come to Highbury at the weekend.

“I don’t see this as a free hit, I see this as an opportunity for us to get three points, and I look forward to that challenge. We will prepare as we would for any other fixture, and we are improving week-on-week. We managed to cause Derby problems and had good moments against Cambridge, but when the moments do come, we have to be ready to take them.

“We don’t need to dress things up, there are three points at stake, and we have to into the next game wanting to win it. That doesn’t matter whether it’s Portsmouth on Saturday, or Wycombe the following week, we will always look to try and win games. When you have the right habits then we will start winning football matches.”

On the steady progression within the squad...

“The progression is there, I’ve seen it on a daily basis both during games and in training sessions, seeing the things we’ve been trying to work into these players, and we’ve had another great week again this time around. It’s important we take that into the weekend now as we know we’ve got to start the game well on Saturday.

“There’s been changes on how we want to build up, how we want to play, and how we cause the opposition problems. I have to say the lads have been unbelievable in taking the information on, we’ve tried to keep everything short and sharp, so they fully understand what we are trying to do and it’s getting better.

“We’ve got to a point now where when they go on the pitch, we can help them, but they need to go on and make those decisions and have to be there to support them whatever they choose.  There’s a structure to what we want but, when you have to quality of players that we have here, they see what’s happening and have to make the decisions.”
