Fleetwood Town fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat to Charlton Athletic at The Valley on Saturday afternoon in their latest League One clash.

It was a brilliant start for the Cods as they managed to work their way into the lead early on through a Jayden Stockley header, but a goal either side of the half for the hosts meant they would take all three points from the clash in South London.

Town started the game strong as they created an attack soon after the start Carl Johnston was played down the left by Junior Quitirna, who then fizzed a low-driven cross into the box towards Ryan Graydon, but Lloyd Jones was there to block the effort.

The early pressure continued as Ryan Broom beat his man on the opposite wing and earned a corner for the Cods, which was taken by the number 11. It was passed short to Quitirna, who noticed Graydon in space on the edge, but his shot went high and wide of the target.

Forward Jayden Stockley came the closest to opening the scoring ten minutes into the clash though as he whipped a free-kick from 20 yards towards goal, but the strike came off the underside of the bar and was eventually cleared by the home side.

It wasn’t long though until the former Addick did break the deadlock as he latched onto Broom’s dangerous cross from the wing to nod home past Harry Isted from inside the area to make the game 1-0 to Scott Brown’s men.

The game quietened down after this as Town looked to keep hold of their lead for a while, until the hosts found a way back into the clash late in the half as loanee Chem Campbell found May with a through ball and the forward calmly slotted home to level it up once again.

Charlton came out the blocks the quick of the two sides in the second half as they created two decent changes almost right away as Stephen McMullan had to push Tyreece Campbell’s effort from the edge wide before May’s shot was blocked by Harrison Holgate from the edge.

Brown’s side came back into it after this spell though as Toto Nsiala thought he’d done enough to get on the end of Quitirna’s free-kick, but it ended up just out of his reach. Shaun Rooney had an effort of his own soon after, but it was easily stopped by Isted.

A big chance to retake the lead came in the 65th minute as a bit of fortune saw Rooney nick the ball off Tayo Edun and drive down the wing. He picked out Stockley on the edge of the box, but the forward's effort didn’t trouble Isted as it flew wide of the mark.

Disaster struck with 18 minutes to go for Town as Edun picked out Corey Blackett-Taylor with a reverse ball but was brought down by Bosun Lawal. The referee decided it was worth a penalty for Charlton, which May struck straight down the middle to give them the lead.

The hosts finished off the game strong, with May almost completing his hat-trick, but McMullan pulled off a brilliant save to deny his volleyed effort. The last chance came soon after as substitute Charlie Kirk put in a ball across the face of goal, but May wasn't able to get on the end of it.
