Fixture: Charlton Athletic v Fleetwood Town
Competition: Sky Bet League One
Kick-off: 15:00
Venue: The Valley
FLEETWOOD TOWN
The Cod Army come into this game on the back of a 1-0 defeat at home to Shrewsbury Town, with means Scott Brown's side are without a win in the league this season. With goalkeeper Jay Lynch and defender Josh Earl seeing straight red cards in that match, there will be obviously changes in the matchday squad this time round.
On Deadline Day, Town brought in two new signings. The first being forward Kabongo Tshimanga - who joined on a season-long loan from fellow League One side Peterborough United. The second signing of the day was another loan, this time from Championship outfit, Hull City. Midfielder Xavier Simons also joins on a season-long loan, and will bolster options in the middle of the park.
Last time Fleetwood made the trip to They Valley, they left with all three points thanks to a thunderbolt from Shaun Rooney and a set-piece header from Harrison Holgate - will the Cods be able to replicate that performance in the capital?
CHARLTON ATHLETIC
Charlton currently sit 19th in Sky Bet League One, four places above the visitors to The Valley on Saturday. They have lost their last three matches, all by one goal with the latter being a 2-1 defeat away at high-flying Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium, with Tyler Goodrham being the man to score a brace to ensure the hosts won the match.
Slobodan Tedić was the last man through the door on Deadline Day - who joined on loan from Premier League side Manchester City. The other names through the door on Friday were versatile defender James Abankwah on loan from Italian top-flight side Udinese. The talented, 19-year-old joins the Addicks for the remainder of the 2023/24 campaign.
And finally, Charlton Athletic announced the loan signing of ball-playing midfielder Louie Watson from Premier League outfit Luton Town.
With former manager Dean Holden relieved of his duties earlier in the week following three defeats on the bounce. Jason Pearce was appointed as Interim Manager on Sunday. and he said in his pre-match press conference that he wants his team to give it their all: “I know what the fans expect and what the club is about, I made that clear as well. I hope we can implement what we expect as a Charlton Athletic team and let’s hope we can get a positive result.”
WHAT SCOTT BROWN HAD TO SAY BEFORE THE MATCH
“You need to go away and frustrate the fans, Jason [Pierce] might change a lot up, he might not, so we don’t know what to expect as he’s an interim manager who’s just been appointed by the club. We always talk about ourselves, and focus on ourselves, so if we put our game plan out there, and play right, we’ve got a right good chance.
“Defensively, we need to be a lot better, we can’t be conceding this amount of goals or giving up the amount of chances that we are doing. Sometimes, it’s just an honest mistake that lets somebody through, but we need to get that out of our game and make sure that if anyone is making mistakes, it’s them.
“We need to be focused for 90 minutes, or 120 minutes, whatever we are going to play these days and make sure that we are ready for anything that teams throw at us. That’s a responsibility on us, but also on the lads as well, to have that willingness and desire to go and keep clean sheets.”
