Fleetwood Town returned to League One action after the international break on Saturday afternoon but fell to a 1-0 defeat to Lincoln City at Highbury Stadium.

Alex Mitchell’s 6th-minute strike was enough to secure manager-less Lincoln all three points on the day, despite a spirited second-half fightback from the Cod Army.

Fleetwood started the opening five minutes on the front foot, with Adam Montgomery looking lively on the left-hand side. The defender combined well with Jack Marriott on a couple of occasions, who came close after pulling an effort narrowly wide of the post.

But the game barely had time to settle before the opening goal arrived, as a minute later the away side broke the deadlock.

Following a Lincoln corner, a Reeco Hackett overhead kick delivered the ball back through a crowded penalty box and landed in the path of Alex Mitchell at the back post, who poked in the opener.

Chances were few and thin for either side after that. The closest moment came when Junior Quitirna showed excellent skill to beat a number of challenges out wide, before teeing up Xavier Simons to hit a curling effort, denied by Lukas Jensen.

As Town searched for an equaliser, Quitirna continued to show his worth on the wing, causing several problems for the Lincoln defence. At the other end, sliding blocks from Bosun Lawal denied Lasse Sorenson from close range twice, as the Imps went into the break a goal to the good.

After the introduction of Kabongo Tshimanga at half-time, the Cods were on top. Firstly, the striker set up Marriott to fire a powerful low effort that was well saved, before Quitirna cut inside and hit one of his trademark efforts that Jensen also denied.

Spurred on by those signs of attacking intent, the Cod Army began creating a few dangerous chances, as Bosun Lawal was the next to come close from a sliding effort at the far post.

With 20 minutes left to play, Fleetwood was still pushing, with Quitirna continuing to set alarm bells ringing in the Lincoln penalty box. The away side had barely troubled Jay Lynch all half but were keeping a tight defensive structure to preserve their one-nil lead.

On a day where it just wouldn’t drop for Fleetwood, Lee Johnson’s side continued to create chances, and with nine minutes of added time signalled, the tie was far from over.

Fleetwood pushed, but with bodies pouring forward were left exposed when Jovan Makama raced through on goal. The striker tangled legs with Toto Nsiala, who was shown a red card deep in added time, as the away side held out to claim all three points.
