Fleetwood Town’s Development Squad lost 2-0 to Birmingham City in their latest Professional Development League fixture at Poolfoot Farm on Monday afternoon.

After what was a well-contested first half, which saw both sides create gilt-edged chances, it was Birmingham who managed to take home the points after both Rico Patterson and Romelle Donovan found the back of the net from range late on in the second half.

The young Cods started the game well and thought they had worked a way through just six minutes in when Phoenix Patterson nicked the ball inside the Birmingham half and drove towards goal, but the defender managed to get back in time to block the effort.

Soon after, it was the turn of winger Maleace Asamoah who beat his man in the midfield and worked a yard of space 20 yards out before unleashing his effort which, unfortunately, went high and wide of the target.

After the Blues’ number 11, Sahid Kamara, had a shot go wide of the far post, Fleetwood almost broke the deadlock when Pharrell Brown ran down the wing and played a brilliant ball across the face of goal for Theo Williams, but his touch couldn’t guide it goal-wards.

Five minutes from time, Patterson played a short corner to Callum Dolan, who returned from a long-term injury to feature in the midfield, and he then fired a shot on goal, which needed to be blocked and cleared.

It should have been Town up at the break, with Sam Glenfield's effort from 25 yards needing to be saved by the Blues goalkeeper, before Harrison Holgate’s header from a corner had to be cleared off the line as the referee’s whistle blew.

After a quadruple change at the break, it was Town who came out the blocks the quicker as they almost found the back of the net early on. Patterson played Williams in, who picked out Pharrell Brown, who struck the ball into the far post from inside the area.

That opener still looked to be destined to be Fleetwood’s as Patterson hit a free-kick into the side-netting from a tough angle before substitute Will Johnson forced a diving save from Bradley Mayo after rising highest in the box to latch onto a corner.

But the visitors showed a bit of composure in the closing stages of the game and put two quickfire goals past Tom Donaghy, the first being a free kick from 20 yards by Patterson, and the second being a long-range strike from Donovan.

This put the Cods in a tough position going into the last few minutes of the game as Birmingham was able to close out the fixture by applying pressure when needed.

Town XI: Donaghy (GK), Jones (Johnson 46’), Armstrong, Glenfield (C), Holgate (Hughes 46’), Teale (Pond 46’), Asamoah (Edwards 75’), Dolan (White 46’), Williams, Patterson, Brown.
