Fleetwood Town’s Under-21s carried on their recent run of good form on Friday evening as they managed to beat Huddersfield Town 3-0 at the Kirklees Stadium in Yorkshire.

The game started in the perfect fashion for Matt Lawlor’s side as they found themselves a goal up just seven minutes into the game when Sam Glenfield applied some pressure on the home defence, winning the ball back just outside their box before calmly slotting home to open the score line.

It really should have been two not long after as Finlay Armstrong and Kyle White linked up on the left-hand side, with the latter playing in a low cross for young forward Sam Fishburn to get on the end of, but he couldn’t quite guide his sliding effort goalwards from six yards out.

He did make up for that miss eight minutes later, just before the half-hour mark when Liam Roberts made the most of a free-kick, which was played towards the near post, as he dribbled past his marker and lobbed the ball into the box, where Fishburn was waiting and he nodded home to double the Cods’ lead on the night.

That was all the action for the first half, but it would have been fair to say, that Lawlor’s side was not done in the game. Around the hour mark, they created three key chances starting with one from full-back Will Johnson who received the ball after a switch from Pharrell Brown and then rifled the ball towards the goal, hitting the underside of the bar.

White and Johnson both went close soon after, with the midfielder firing a low shot on target and the defender whipping his free-kick just wide of the near post, but the third goal was coming and it was Fishburn who would complete his brace in Huddersfield.

A duo of Sams linked up for this one as Glenfield struck the initial effort on target, which forced a good save from the home side’s goalkeeper, but he couldn’t keep hold of the ball and Fishburn saw his opportunity and chased it up before tapping it into the back of the net from a yard out.

This recent run of form has raised the side’s position in the league and they will want this to continue when they travel to face Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday afternoon at Wakefield Trinity’s stadium in a 1pm kick-off.

Town XI: Donaghy, Johnson (Cirino 86’), Pond, Hughes (Whelan 86’), Armstrong, Wilson, Glenfield, White, Roberts (Richmond 73’), Brown, Fishburn (Lane 76’).

Unused subs: Cragg (GK).
