FLEETWOOD TOWN

Fleetwood go into their final pre-season game of the summer before the season starts next week as the Cods host League Two side Grimsby Town at Highbury. It has been a challenging, testing and rewarding pre-season for Fleetwood which started at sister-club Waterford FC, but will come to an end on home soil as the start of the Sky Bet League One campaign is just round the corner next weekend.

With solid foundations being built in the side as the Cods most recent outing against Preston North End finished in what proved to be a fiercely goalless draw.

In what was a rotated side, a mix of youth and experience with the backline remained unchanged, Brown changed two outfielders as Promise Omochere and Ryan Broom came in for Jack Marriot and Danny Mayor -  proving the depth and quality that Brown has in his artillery.

Positive cameos came from many who came on, but in particular Maleace Asamoah and Cian Hayes as the young forwards’ trickery and pace proved difficult for North End’s backline.

In what was a competitive pre-season Lancashire derby against Preston, it was another good test and learning experience for the players who featured to get more minutes under the belt, and for Brown to finely tune his plans in the penultimate pre-season game in preparation with the final one to come against the Mariners before for the highly anticipated league opener away at Carlisle United.

GRIMSBY TOWN

Grimsby Town make the journey up to Highbury Stadium from Lincolnshire in what is their final pre-season campaign in what has saw a mixed-bag of results for The Mariners – whilst the results don’t matter too much and it’s being all about dusting off the cobwebs, Paul Hursts’ men will be hoping for a good performance this weekend to finish pre-season on a high and to take a positive result into their first game of the season against AFC Wimbledon at Blundell Park.

The Mariners, who were a few places short of a play-off spot in last years league campaign, will be hoping to better that in the up and coming season. The addition of eight new faces through the door alongside some run-outs to gain valuable minutes against a variety of opponents wins against Grimsby Borough and rivals Lincoln City made for ideal showing, however their most recent fixture a 3-2 loss to Boston United allows  valuable learning opportunities and thinking to build on from.

With signings such as Donovan Wilson from Sutton United, Danny Rose from Stevenage, Charlie Vernam from Leyton Orient, Abo Eisa from Bradford and Rekeil Pyke from Shrewsbury -  all new faces through the door in attacking positions, Grimsby will no doubt be looking to improve on previous positions in years gone by since their return to League Two in 2021.
