Fleetwood Town’s December Player of the Month, Brendan Wiredu, spoke to the press after the Cods’ 2-1 win over Championship side Queens Park Rangers at Highbury.

A goal either side of the half-time break by Town, by Toto Nsiala and Promise Omochere, secured the historic win and a sport in the Fourth Round of the Emirates FA Cup – which is the furthest the club has ever gone in the competition.

This is what Wiredu had to say in his post-match interview:

On progressing through to the next round…

“We’re pretty excited that we’re the bunch of lads to do it and the performance only deserved to go through today. I thought we all played really well.

“I think it shows the character in the team as we’ve shown this season that we can get late goals as well. The togetherness in the team showed out there today. We all ran for each other and fought for each other.”

On playing centre back…

“It’s an enjoyable position [centre back], I can get on the ball quite a lot which I do in midfield as well so when I get the ball, I can drive with it which is one of my traits.

“He’s a character [Toto Nsiala]; It’s good [to have him alongside me], he’s experienced and talks to me throughout the whole game and that helps me and makes it seem as if I’ve played there all my life.

“I’m going to take the assist for his goal today too because I blocked the man, so he needs to remember that and give me one back. We’ve worked on corners all year so it’s good to finally see one pay off.”

On the positive start to the New Year…

“We’re a good team; when we go up against anyone, we think we can give them a fair fight. We’ve shown that this season when we’ve come up against the teams that are higher up.

“We don’t fear anybody; we go into each game, knowing that we’ve got the best chance of winning the game.

“We know there are some games we should’ve seen out but today we’ve won so we’ve got to take this momentum into the next game on Saturday and hopefully go and get three points then.”
