Assistant head coach Steven Whittaker spoke to the press after Town lost out to Oxford United at Highbury Stadium.

It was a good start to the game from the Cods as they found themselves going into the break a goal to the good thanks to a calmly struck effort from midfielder Brendan Wiredu, but two second-half goals from Kyle Joseph and Ciaron Brown swayed the tie into the visitors’ favour.

Here’s what Steven had to say after the game:

On the game as a whole…

“We’re extremely disappointed, and frustrated is probably the right way to describe it. We thought we did enough in the game to win it. We could have had a much more comfortable second half. Only a goal in it, they’re always going to be in the game.”

“You know how the corner comes about is the main frustration at the end of the day. We felt we deserved something from the game. We were getting shots away, hitting targets quite a lot. Their keeper just made a few good saves.

“The positive thing is we’re in good areas, we’re getting shots away. We have to try and be more clinical, is probably the message to the boys.”

On the frustrations in the game…

“I think the frustration is with the decision that leads to them taking all the points; we could’ve done better with the first goal; it was probably slightly against the run of play. We probably started the second half on the front foot so that was positive, but the game turns at that moment.

“It allows them to get three points ahead of us, so we need to try and claw that back in the coming weeks. We’ll regroup this week and go again. The boys will be disappointed, they’ll have a couple of days now just to refresh.”
