Assistant head coach Steven Whittaker spoke to the media after Fleetwood Town’s secured a valuable point against high-flying Plymouth Argyle at Home Park.

It was a valiant performance from everyone who put on the blue Town strip in Devon on Saturday afternoon as they fought hard from minute one to ensure they would stay unbeaten against Argyle and in the month of February so far.

Here’s what Whitts had to say after the game:

On the point and the performance…

“We’re obviously happy with the performance and the fact we’ve taken a point this afternoon against top of the league, so to come away from home and take something from the game is a massive plus point for us.

“It’s been a tough run of fixtures, so we had to freshen it up today with four new faces which were able to bring us some energy and a bit of quality in possession as well. We had to make a change early doors, but everyone who puts on the shirt at the minute is doing the job that’s needed.”

On the work out of possession...

“We’re on a good run so we came here with confidence and know that the structure of the team has been really good, so boys all worked hard out of possession today and they needed to if they wanted to take anything away from the game.

“We gave up a bit of possession today, of which we would like to have more to control areas of the game but, Plymouth are that good in possession that we had to give that up a bit. In the attacks we did create on the counter, we could have taken a bit more care and had that bit more quality in the final third."

On the many positives from the afternoon...

“There’s been a lot of work put in since we came to the club in the summer as we needed to stop conceding as many goals as we did last season and it’s nice to get back to the clean sheets. Before midweek, we hadn’t had one in a while so it’s good to get two in a row.

“They are a top team in this league so we’ve managed to beat them on the second day of the season, really early and our first home game of the season, so we were well up for that game and have managed to come down and take another point off of them today which is pleasing.

“With the tough run of fixtures, we knew the games were going to come thick and fast so it was all about gaining a bit of momentum, picking up points, and we’ve managed to do that from the start of the run – we’ve got four games in the next two weeks so there is plenty more to come.”
