Forward Carlos Mendes Gomes scored the winning goal in this afternoon’s Lancashire Derby against his former side Morecambe and the club spoke to him after the game.
It was a great move to kick off the tie at Highbury as Shaun Rooney ran down the right before playing in Jayden Stockley on the wing. He then played the cross that he would like into the box where the Spaniard was able to tap in from close range.
Here’s what Carlos had to say after the game:
On his goal and not celebrating…
“It’s always nice to help the team, it was a lovely cross from [Jayden] Stockley. I knew that I needed to guide the ball because it came at me with pace.
“I was delighted to score; we know the size of Stockley and the quality he brings. I knew as soon as he got the ball out wide that he had the quality to fire it across, I just had to make sure I made that run.
“Everybody knows the love I have for Morecambe, a team that picked me up from non-league, not many clubs are willing to take that risk - that is why I didn’t celebrate; I believe that it wasn’t right to.”
On the team spirit and the recent run of form…
“I think everyone has done a fantastic job lately, I knew it was a matter of time to turn the narrow draws or good performances into victories.
“So, delighted to score and be able to be at the back door and sometimes it’s one of those games where you score first and need to grind it out which we did.
“We know that we were at the wrong end of the table and obviously we are now showing our qualities as individuals. Everything is starting to click, and we are working hard to push up the table.
“Yeah, I think that we have been showing the quality of the team. We’ve had some great performances but coming out without anything but lately, we’ve been making sure that we get those clean sheets.”
