Whittaker: We looked a threat all day on the counter

Assistant head coach Steven Whittaker spoke to the press after Fleetwood Town managed to beat Accrington Stanley 5-2 at the Wham Stadium.

It was a memorable day for all involved from the Cods as a Jack Marriott hat-trick, as well as goals from Phoenix Patterson and Promise Omochere, helped see off an emphatic victory over our Lancashire rivals on Saturday afternoon.

Here’s what Whitts had to say in his interview:

On the quality performances all over the park…

“The performance overall was very good; we looked a threat all day on the counter, we were sharp, and picked up plenty of second balls. One thing is we lacked a bit of composure in the final third as we could have scored a few more – on another day we could have made a few more chances.

“We were on the boys a bit as in the last few games, we haven’t started great, so it was important we started that way this time out. In the first half, we were on the front foot and played well and scored the goals we needed in that half.

“Both Jack [Marriott] and Jayden [Stockley] have played well together; Jack plays off the shoulder and Jayden is a great target for us as he allows us to get up the pitch quicker. They bounce off each other and both have chipped in with crucial goals already.”

On keeping their nerve after conceding a couple…

“It became a bit shakier than we would have liked after conceding two goals, you could see the boys getting frustrated out there, but they stood up to it well and we were always a threat when we picked up the second balls – it was good that we were more ruthless late on and finished it off.

“The whole first half I felt comfortable in how the boys were playing as they were battling well which allowed us to play in their half a bit more, but we lost a bit of control in the second half. They got a goal from a set play, and we lost our way for a bit, but settled it late on with a few more goals.”
