Fleetwood Town Wrens Ladies only had one of their squads in action at the weekend, who managed to progress in the North West Women’s Regional Football League Argyle Cup after beating Bury Women 5-4 on penalties.

The game started well for the Cods as they looked to begin the game on the front foot, which paid out as the deadlock was broken just five minutes into the cup tie. A penalty decision went Town’s way soon after and that was cleverly dispatched, meaning the lead would be doubled within 10 minutes of kick-off.

It was a good reaction from the home side as they managed to pull the score back to level terms before the break as two quickfire goals meant the score line at half-time would be 2-2 at Elton High School. It was heartbreak for Fleetwood after the restart as they conceded a penalty, which was converted by the Bury forward, so a comeback was needed to progress in the competition.

The fight continued for both teams, going end-to-end until the final whistle, but Bury held strong until the closing minutes when Town were able to grab one back, taking it to all level 3-3, so penalties were on the cards for the tie.

Both teams missed one of their first five penalties, but the Cods managed to keep their nerves in sudden death as they won out, beating them 5-4 from the spot.

Town squad: O’Neill, Scanlan, Cardwell, Sarsfield, C.Parkinson, E.Parkinson, Whittaker, Hendry, Crawshaw, E.Slater, S.Slater, Jones, Scott, Brown, Woods.

Goal scorers: Sophie Slater (2) and Alicia Scott.

Player(s) of the Match: Eve Whittaker and Sophie Slater.
