Brown: It was an encouraging performance from the lads

Fleetwood Town head coach Scott Brown spoke to the media after his sides 2-1 defeat at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

The Cods shot into the lead early on in the clash after Shaun Rooney’s venomous effort hit the back of the net, but goals from George Byers and Marvin Johnson meant all the points would head down the road with Wednesday at the full-time whistle.

Here’s what the gaffer had to say after the game:

On the game…

“I’m disappointed, I thought we played well; we controlled the game for large periods of time, we created chances, we’ve had more shots on target than them, more shots.

I’m disappointed in the end that they scored two goals from the second phase of set plays. We’ve got to be a little bit more switched on in those areas. For me, did we do enough to at least get a point, 100%.

“I thought Ged [Garner] was great, especially in the first half, Callum [Morton] and Carlos [Mendes Gomes] and Bats [Dan Batty] and that’s what we worked a lot on with the front four this week and they’ve taken that in.”

On the performance…

“We were brave on the ball, we controlled the game for large periods of time, the lads understanding and willingness to get on the ball and wanting to play forwards and to create these chances as well does help.

“I think they frightened them a little bit as well and that’s what we want to do, especially at home. In the second half, just because we got the wind, we went a little more direct, tried to be a little bit physical and we need to realise there’s a time and a place to try and do that.

“It doesn’t always have to go forward. We’ve got to be patient in the build-up, pull people out of position and when we do, that’s when we’ve got to penetrate.

“We’ve probably not worked enough on defending and locking out. We start to let teams come back and we get a little bit deeper and a little bit deeper and invite the pressure on us. It’s not what we usually want, and we want to be on the front foot, and we’ve got to put them under pressure.”

On the tie away at Barnsley…

“They’ve been playing three, five, two recently. It’s just about getting an understanding of what shape they’re going to play.

“We might have to change our shape as well as we’re going to miss Rooney now so we might have to go to a back three as well which we’ve done in the past, so we’ll just work on that in the next couple of days.

“They’ve got some good players; they’ve got some quality players as well. They’ve just come down and were on a bad run at the start of the season, now they’ve kicked on and I think they’ve done well recently. We need to make sure we’re switched on, we’re ready to go, we’re refreshed and as healthy as we possibly can be for the game.”
