FLEETWOOD TOWN

The opening day of the new season started off brightly for the Cod Army away at Port Vale. Dan Batty – who had scored three in three during pre-season – opened his league count with a fine goal 6 minutes into the match. Summer Signing Promise Omochere picked out the former Hull City midfielder who slotted it past Aidan Stone in the Vale goal.

The hosts – who won their play-off final in May 2022 – struggled in the opening exchanges, but managed to pull a goal back on the half-hour mark through Nathan Smith. Two minutes later, the Valiants grabbed what was to be the winner through Connor Hall.

Town had their moments in the second half but failed to capitalise on chances that came their way. With a week on the training ground, Scott Brown and his coaching staff have been working hard with this weekend being their first official match in front of the home faithful.

PLYMOUTH ARGYLE

The Green Army started off their League One campaign with a 1-0 victory over Barnsley at Home Park. The only goal in the match saw Finn Azaz bag this first of the campaign on the 45th minute mark after joining from Premier League, Aston Villa on a season-long loan.

Plymouth have recruited well during the summer, bringing in six players with four of those being loan deals. Azaz was the first through the door, closely followed by Morgan Whittaker from Swansea, Bali Mumba from Norwich and Nigel Lonwijk from Wolves.

Their two permanent signings this window have seen Matt Butcher and Mikel Miller come on a free transfer, with them joining from Accrington Stanley and Rotherham United respectively.

With Argyle winning 26 games in all competitions last season, finishing 7th in League One – just three points outside the play-off spots. They goal will be to go one step further this campaign.

LAST MEETING BETWEEN THE SIDES

Last time the two sides met, it ended in a six-goal thriller at Highbury. Luke Jephcott opened the scoring in the 20th minute, with Paddy Lane replying four minutes later. With the scores level at the break, the visitors scored two second half goals to make it 3-1 with and with 89 on the clock, they thought they’d be making the trip back to the South West with all three points.

Fleetwood had different ideas, and when Ellis Harrison got one back with one minute left on the clock, there was time for one more goal. Callum Johnson was Town’s saviour that Tuesday night, scoring late in injury time to salvage a point for the Cod Army.

SCOTT BROWN ON PLYMOUTH ARGYLE

“We know that every game will be competitive. I have watched a lot of them recently and I think they will start off with a back three so it’s about how we can go and expose them and target the areas that they are weak in.

“Plymouth are a team who like to keep possession and play out from the back, and they do have some great players in the middle of the park and if we can put some pressure on them and force them back.

"We just have to be brave on the ball and we did showcase that in the first 25-30 minutes against Port Vale, but once they scored, we got nervous and stopped doing that. I know we can be calmer on the ball and keep possession better in those situations.”
