FLEETWOOD TOWN

Since the opening day defeat at Port Vale, Town have won back-to-back games at Highbury, with the first being a 2-1 victory over Plymouth Argyle in the first home game of the new season. After going a goal behind, Scott Brown’s men came from behind to claim all three points, thanks to goals from Dan Batty and Joe Garner.

In midweek, the Cod Army beat Championship side Wigan Athletic in the First Round of the Carabao Cup. Ged Garner’s first half header was enough to knock out the Latics. Fleetwood Town will now face Premier League side, Everton at Highbury, with a date and kick-off time t to be confirmed. It will take place the W/C 22 August 2022.

MORECAMBE

The Shrimps have had a slow start to the 2022/23 season, with a draw on the opening day and then a defeat on the road to promotion hopefuls, Peterborough United. The first match – which was played at the Mazuma Stadium – was a tight contest against Shrewsbury, with both teams having chances, but failing to convert them into goals.

Morecambe’s second match against Posh saw Joe Ward and Ben Thompson score in the first half, with Hector Kyprianou bag his first of the season with 20 minutes left on the clock.

Derek Adams’ side did progress into Round Two of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night. They played out a goalless draw with Championship side Stoke City but won 5-3 on penalties. Morecambe will now face Rotherham United on Tuesday 23 August.

LAST MEETING BETWEEN THE SIDES

Last time the two sides met, it was on Saturday 18 December and for those who remember, it was foggy for the whole 90 minutes at the Mazuma Stadium. With visibility low, it meant supporters struggled to see one end to the other, but the match ended goalless with Town edging the better chances in the match with four shots on target to Morecambe’s one.

ONE CURRENT PLAYER WHO HAS PLAYED FOR BOTH CLUBS

Ashley Hunter is a name that will be familiar to the Cod Army. The 26-year-old left Fleetwood in July 2020 to join Salford City on a permanent deal. He played 181 times for Fleetwood in the league, scoring 31 goals.

At Salford, Hunter made 74 league appearances, scoring just 8 goals in a two year spell at the Ammies. He joined Morecambe in July of this year, and has featured in both league fixtures and also the cup match against Stoke City.

SCOTT BROWN ON MORECAMBE

“It’s going to be a tough match; they got a great result in midweek against Stoke but we’ve played against Stoke so we know what a quality side they are - we are looking forward to the occasion. Morecambe are a side who have swapped and changed formations, but for me, it’s all about us and how we prepare, how we turn up on the day, and how we prepare ahead of the game.

“Cole [Stockton]’s a great player and it’s going to be tough to play against him at the weekend. We’ve watched a lot of him, especially in the last week as well building up to this game so, for us, it’s about us going forward and concentrating on ourselves. He scored almost half of their goals last season so, as I say, he’s a fantastic player.

“It’s a given that you work as hard as you can, especially in a derby match for 90 minutes. If we do that, hopefully, it all pays off with what we’ve done in training and how the lads have worked. I know Derek Adams. He had a wonderful career and is doing a great job at Morecambe but for me, it’s all about us and how we prepare.”
