FLEETWOOD TOWN

Since the opening day defeat at Port Vale, Town have remained unbeaten in all competition. They picked up all three points in their first home league match of the season against Plymouth Argyle, with a win a few days later over Championship side Wigan Athletic in the Carabao Cup.

In Town’s last two matches, they have picked up two draws. The first being in the Lancashire Derby against Morecambe at the Mazuma Stadium. Danny Andrew’s late goal sealed a point on the road, with the latter being a goalless draw against Cheltenham at Highbury on Tuesday Night. Callum Morton, Shaun Rooney and Andrew all went close, but couldn’t quite get the ball over the line.

DERBY COUNTY

The Rams have had a steady start to their life in League One. They opened their league campaign with a 1-0 victory over Karl Robinson’s Oxford United. Summer signing Conor Hourihane scored ten-minutes from the end to seal the victory.

They lost 1-0 in their second encounter against Charlton on The Valley, and then bounced back with two back to back wins. The first being a 2-1 win in the Carabao Cup against Mansfield Town, then another 2-1 win over Barnsley at Pride Park.

On Tuesday night, just like their opponents this weekend, they played out a goalless draw away at Shrewsbury Town. They currently sit 7th in the league table after four matches played.

ONE CURRENT PLAYER WHO HAS PLAYED FOR BOTH CLUBS

Tom Barkhuizen played 15 times for Fleetwood Town whilst on loan from neighbours, Blackpool. He scored one goal during his time at Highbury, with that being the winner in the 2-1 win over Barnet on Saturday 29 September 2012.

Barkhuizen started off his career at Blackpool, however, was loaned out three times to Fleetwood, Hereford and Morecambe. He eventually made a permanent move to the Shrimps in May 2015, where he played 64 times for them, scoring 17 goals.

Lancashire side Preston North End came calling for the midfielder in January 2017. In a five-year spell at Deepdale, he played over 200 matches, scoring 38 times for the Lilywhites. He moved to Derby County in July 2022 on a free transfer, playing in all five games this campaign.

SCOTT BROWN ON DERBY COUNTY

“Derby are a huge club and they have an unbelievable following as well. We have watched a lot of videos of their games, and they play good football, and they have players who are comfortable on the ball.

“For us, it’s about how to go and press them and how we are going to squeeze them because our game plan in every game is to squeeze teams and Put pressure on them. It’s how we deal with them from goal-kicks, free-kicks, and corners and with their understanding of their game plan.

“With any big team that comes to Highbury, we need to show that we the quality to match them and that is with the intensity off the ball as well as quality on the ball. It’s when we have the ball, how can we play, how can we be expansive and how can we create chances and score goals.

“We have to believe that we can win the game. For me, you have to go into every game believing that you can win the game.”

Report: The points are shared at Highbury after Derby draw

20 August 2022

Fleetwood Town played out a goalless draw against Derby County at Highbury on Saturday afternoon, picking up their third clean sheet in four games.

It was a game where both sides created meaningful chances throughout the fixture, but neither was able to capitalise on them. Jay Lynch did brilliantly to deny the visitors on numerous occasions in the first half, with Town having multiple meaningful chances in the second period.

The game started with Fleetwood having to deal with some pressure from the visitors as Lynch was forced into two good saves early on. The first chance came in the fourth minute as he dove to his left to deny Lewis Dobbin before stopping Conor Hourihane’s strike from range four minutes later.

Two more chances came soon after as Craig Forsyth picked out James Collins inside the Town box, who struck over the bar from six yards, with Eiran Cashin mistiming a volley at the back post as the shot went wide of the mark.

With the wind acting as a 12th man for the away side, it was tough for the Cods to get out from the back. The weather also played a part in the next chance as Hourihane was able to swing his shot from a set-piece on target, but Lynch was able to match the effort.

Fleetwood found their footing in the game around the half-hour mark as they created two quickfire chances. The first came from a Josh Vela interception, which Danny Andrew was able to get onto, before guiding the ball into the Derby box, with Joe Wildsmith having to quickly react to it to stop it from going straight in.

A minute later, Harvey Macadam’s cross from the left was cleared only to Vela 20-yards out, who cut the ball onto his left foot and tried his luck from range, getting past Forsyth in the process, but the effort went over the crossbar.

As the clock was approaching the half-time mark, Derby had another couple of good chances as Collins saw his powerful effort stopped by Lynch at his near post, with Knight trying his luck a couple of minutes later from 25-yards fly high and wide.

It was a slow start to the second period, with most of the play in the middle of the park. The Cod Army had to wait until the 63rd minute for the first chance of the half as good interplay by Promise Omochere and Dan Batty saw the ball find its way to Ged Garner, whose shot needed to be saved by Joe Wildsmith.

Another chance followed as Batty whipped a cross into a dangerous area from the right, as Brendan Wiredu rose highest to get his head onto it, but, unfortunately, headed over the bar from close range. Shaun Rooney started an attack a minute after that, with his shot needing to be blocked.

The game then petered out after that with half chances being created for both sides, with the best one coming for the hosts as substitute Joe Garner almost connected with his attempted volley from Andrew’s cross, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Town XI: Lynch (GK), Andrew, Wiredu (Johnston 89’), Vela (C), G.Garner (J.Garner 73’), Omochere (Hayes 82’), Nsiala, Batty, Rooney, Macadam, Earl.

Unused subs: Stolarczyk (GK), Baker, White, Glenfield.

Derby XI: Wildsmith (GK), Forsyth, Hourihane, Cashin, Barkhuizen (Sibley 59’), Bird (C), Collins, Mendez-Laing, Dobbin (McGoldrick 59’), Stearman, Knight.

Unused subs: Loach (GK), Smith, Roberts, Thompson, Rooney.
