Fleetwood Town forward Ged Garner spoke to the Club after scoring the winning goal in the 1-0 victory over Championship side Wigan Athletic at Highbury Stadium.

Town faced the Latics in Round One of the Carabao Cup, and thanks to Garner’s first half header, the Cod Army are now in the hat for Round Two – which will be drawn on Wednesday night at 10pm.

Here is what Ged had to say following the match:

On the match and the winning goal…

“I thought we were worthy winners on the night. We controlled the game and had a very good first half and probably the better team. We did get a little but nervy towards the end of the tie as there was only one goal in it but it was great to see it out.

“For the goal, it was important I stayed alive and alert inside the box and when the ball missed me first time, it was about me getting into a good position and make sure you’re alive to get the second ball and that’s what I did, got my head on it and guided it in the goal.

“The gaffer [Scott Brown] has been on me a bit about doing the hard yards in games and getting myself after defenders so for me it was a big part of my performance tonight and implement what we’ve been working on in training.”

On the attacking options up top and the squad…

“it’s great that we have healthy competition for places all over the field, especially in the attacking options. The guys here are all great players so when you do get your chance to prove yourself, you’ve got to take it and tonight I thought I did that.

“This season does feel different. We all know what happened last season, we weren’t good enough but now it’s about coming together, both new and old players getting used to each other and pushing on.”

Back-to-back home wins…

“For the group it’s massive getting a win tonight and then at the weekend. When the gaffer came in, he made a big thing about making Highbury a fortress and getting after teams when they come here, and ultimately make it a horrible place for them to play.

“To get the win against Dundee United in pre-season, then win against Port Vale at the weekend and now the win over Wigan, it’s a great start in making this place a fortress and now for us, it’s about maintaining that!”
