Andrew: It’s important we match their energy

Fleetwood Town defender Danny Andrew spoke to the media on Thursday ahead of the Lancashire Derby match against Morecambe this weekend.

The 31-year-old has started all three of Town’s matches this season, with the last two being victories over Plymouth Argyle and Wigan Athletic on home soil.

Andrew knows the importance of Saturday’s match against the Shrimps, with the Cods now looking for three wins on the bounce, and the bragging rights in Lancashire.

Here is what the left-back had to say:

On Morecambe…

“It’s the first time we’ve won back-to-back games for a while, so we go into it full of confidence. We know it’s going to be a tough game; it’s a derby match and they will be up for it and it’s important we match their energy and that’s a bare minimum.

“Cole Stockton is a player we can’t let shoot, especially from the halfway line. For us we just need to focus on the game and get that clean sheet and stop their best players and counter from that.”

On the mood within the camp…

“I think we needed that result on Tuesday to make it back-to-back wins. It was a sloppy start from us, we know that it’s a tough place to go at Port Vale and with their promotion last season, their momentum was in full-swing but since then, I feel we have done well.

“I think the gaffer [Scott Brown] has brought in the same mentality in as a manager as he was as a player with that drive and that will to win and the need to win. As a group, we don’t expect anything else than the three points on a Saturday or Tuesday night.

“His energy and how he transfers that across to us players on the training pitch and the intense play he wants to get across. Momentum is key and it’s important we take on board what he wants us to do with playing out from the back, and the more we implement his ideas and the more we train, the better we will become but we know there’s always room for improvements.”

On the winning mentality…

“You can get into a habit of losing games, which is ultimately a bad mindset to be in but with the two home wins on the bounce, the atmosphere in the dressing room and around the place has been great.

“I think there was a stat out there that it was seven months or so since our last win at home, it’s a good job none of us saw or knew about that before the Plymouth game so there was no added pressure. We are just looking forward to winning more games this season.

“I don’t think a single person within the building wants to have a season like we did last season. I definitely don’t want to be in that position, but we know we are only two games into the season, it’s a long marathon and we need to keep ticking the games off.”
