FLEETWOOD TOWN

Town carried on their perfect start to this year’s Papa John’s Trophy in their last outing as they managed to beat Barrow 3-1 at Holker Street last Tuesday.

Jay Matete opened the scoring in the second half with a wonderful strike from 25-yards with his weak foot before Ryan Edmondson doubled the side’s lead, latching onto a cross from the left. Max McMillan opened his account for the club late on in the game, which was his debut, with Ozzy Zanzala scoring Barrow’s only goal of the game.

In the game before, Simon Grayson’s side narrowly fell short in their Sky Bet League One clash against Charlton Athletic at Highbury.

An end-to-end first half saw Jonathan Leko open the scoring just before the break with a strike from outside the box and despite a fantastic free-kick from Danny Andrew and several chances from Fleetwood, it wasn’t enough to maintain their unbeaten streak as substitute Jayden Stockley’s goal took the game away from Fleetwood.

CREWE ALEXANDRA

Crewe also kept their 100% record going in this year’s EFL Trophy on Tuesday as they came out on top in the cup tie against Wigan Athletic at the Alexandra Stadium.

The Railwaymen started the game as they meant to go on, scoring the opening goal of the game just 14 minutes in through Oliver Finney – who scored his second goal of the season – with an own goal from Wigan’s Scott Smith sealing the win on the hour mark.

Before that, Crewe Alexandra lost their two-goal lead against Cambridge United to draw 2-2 on the day, again at home.

Crewe dominated most of the first half and deservedly led through goals from midfielders Finney, and Scott Robertson, but a spirited second-half fightback from Mark Bonner’s Cambridge saw them take a point from the game.

PRE-MATCH QUOTES: SIMON GRAYSON

Head Coach Simon Grayson spoke to the local press ahead of Fleetwood Town’s Sky Bet League One clash against Crewe this Saturday. Here is what he had to say in his interview:

“When we’ve watched the games and had reports back on them, they are a club in change as they lost [Owen] Dale, Harry [Pickering], and a few others who went back on loan so they’ve had to re-recruit a new group of players, who may still be finding their feet.

“All you’ve got to do is look at their last two away games, they drew against Rotherham and drew at Plymouth as well. They also drew against Cambridge in their last game, so we know we are in for a tough one.

“There are no easy games in this division and we’ve got to be at it with, and without, the ball and try to punish them whilst limiting them to a few opportunities because they’ve got players who can take them. They’ve got Chris Porter and one or two others so I know that it’ll be a tough task.”

“We are in a good position in terms of the number of goals but somewhere down the line, I would like to have a clean sheet in the books as it gives you a better opportunity. If you are watching us as a Fleetwood fan, or as a neutral, you are going to get some entertainment and that’s what football is all about.”

Report: Three second half goals secure three points against Crewe

Fleetwood Town had a happy return from the international break as three second half goals from Callum Johnson, Danny Andrew, and Ged Garner was enough for the home side to collect all three points against Crewe Alexandra.

Fleetwood had several great chances to take the lead in the first half but due to a couple of good saves from Will Jaaskelainen and the post, the scores remained level at half-time.

Well-deserved goals from Johnson and another stunning free-kick from Andrew were the difference makers for Fleetwood in the second half, taking the game away from Crewe.

Fleetwood piled on the pressure early on as Callum Camps won a free-kick in a dangerous position that resulted in a corner. James Hill rose highest to win the header from the corner and came very close to grabbing the first goal of the game.

Town came even closer to opening the scoring as the ball ricocheted around in the box waiting to be tapped in but no player in a red strip could get there in time. From the resulting corner, both Danny Andrews and Camps forced good saves out of Jaaskelainen to once again, deny the home side the lead.

Ryan Edmondson was the next Fleetwood man to challenge Crewe’s number one, this time with a header from a few yards out, Jaaskelainen produced a fine save to deny Town’s forward.

There was a spell in the game where Crewe had the majority of possession, but Town prevented them from creating anything that seriously worried Alex Cairns. Robertson had a shot from distance that went wide of the goal but that was the extent of the visitor’s chances for the first half an hour.

Town ended the first half exactly how they started it, on the front foot. Andrew won his side a free-kick in injury time and he was the man to take it. The number three, looking to make it two goals in two league games, left the goalkeeper stranded but his effort rattled the post, which left the teams going into the break, level.

The home side came out of the second half in search of the opener, and they nearly found it through Dan Batty. His cross was left to go all the way through the crowd and unfortunately, it struck the post again, Biggins followed it up, but he was offside.

The hosts finally got their much-deserved goal, and it came from a Dan Batty corner. Johnson was the man who jumped higher than anyone else and his powerful header was too much for Crewe’s goalkeeper and it went straight down the middle of the net.

Andrew did make it two goals in two league games, with yet again another superb free-kick. Jay Matete was the man brought down just outside the D and Andrew did the rest, putting it over the wall into the top right corner.

Ged Garner finally found himself on the scoresheet after a great performance, with the last play of the game. A long ball over the top was chased down by Callum Morton who selflessly squared it to his teammate to put through Jaaskelainen’s legs to make it 3-0, just before the final whistle.
