Head Coach Simon Grayson spoke to the media after Fleetwood Town's defeat to Accrington Stanley in the Papa John's Trophy.

Town have now secured their spot in the Second Round of the competition after managing who wins in the group over Leicester City Under-21s and Barrow but fell to defeat to Accy at home on Tuesday evening.

Here's what the Gaffer had to say after the game:

On the game…

“In the first half there was not much in it, two great goals from them from distance, fantastic strikes and in the second half, we were a shadow of ourselves. We’ve got to play with more intensity without the ball, win more second balls, play with more urgency and we didn’t.

“You’ve got to play with heart and have hunger, desire, and passion. Just because it’s another football match that we needed to win, and we wanted to win, and we were desperate to win and we didn’t show those qualities that you have to have in any football match in the second half.

“I thought in the first half we played alright; we were competing well enough but in the second half once the third goal went in, we just seemed to accept that we’ve qualified already. Nottingham had a free header for the fourth goal, it was too easy for the third goal, all these things can play against individuals when it comes to selecting the team next week.”

On the team performance…

“This is a good football club, we’ve got some good players, but we’ve got to do both sides of the game. I said to the players before the game, play yourselves into the Morecambe team for when we come back to the league game and if some of those players are not in the team then there are no complaints because it wasn’t good enough tonight, not acceptable.

“We still want to play and pass in tight areas when it’s not on to do it. We’ve got to ask more questions of the opposition and go back to basics and there’s going to be a lot of work done on the training ground before we play again, that’s for sure.

"I'm confident in what I'm doing. I need the players to buy into what we are trying to do, so we're all in this together, it's not been an easy run with the fixtures we've had and some of the performances have been good. We've got a good week to get on the training pitch and do some really tough work that we need to get into the players before this next run of games."

On getting focused...

"We have to get focused again on what we have to do to be better because they're a genuine bunch of lads, I like working with them and they've done reasonably well so far but we have to knuckle down and put in performances that show heart, desire and grit to get us up the table when we go back to the league.

"It's hard for us all to take because there wasn't that much in the game, all credit to the Accrington lads who hit them, they aren't going to score too many goals like that ever again in their careers, especially two in a match.

"They might not be getting as many days off as they first thought, so we'll get the balance right with a clear week next week, but we'll be focusing on what we can do better collectively and individually as a team.”
