Fleetwood Town are delighted to confirm the appointment of Matt Lawlor as Head of Coaching and Player Development in the club’s thriving Academy.

He steps-up from his role as Youth Development Phase boss and will now be tasked with supporting, developing and educating coaches in consistently planning, designing and delivering effective training sessions that meet clear outcomes aligned to the club’s playing philosophy, thus having both direct and indirect impact on player development.

Lawlor, 32, has been at the club for two years on a full-time basis following a football career which saw him play for both Blackpool and AFC Fylde, making more than 100 appearances for the latter.

He also spent three months as Under 18s boss following Simon Wiles’ step-up to first team duty, helping them to the North West Youth Alliance League title. And the club’s Academy manager, Jack Higgins feels Lawlor is the perfect person for the role.

“I am really pleased to see Matt step up to the Head of Coaching & Player Development and look forward to working with him more closely,” said Higgins.

"He’s shown this season what a good coach he is and has had direct impact on player development within the Youth Development Phase over the past few seasons.

"This is a new challenge for him in developing the coaches, as well as players, but one I have no doubt he will thrive in.”

The Academy have enjoyed a memorable season having seen six of its Under-18 players signing professional contracts, a number of whom have already made their first team debuts. Seven Academy players are currently also away on international duty.
