Development Squad coach Stephen Crainey spoke to the club a youthful Fleetwood Town side lost out to Chester in a pre-season friendly on Saturday afternoon.

The game at the Deva Stadium started out with the home side gaining the lead through an Anthony Dudley strike, before goals from James Hardy and Jude Oyibo put the game out of reach from The Cods, even though the side created various chances and troubled the goalkeeper throughout.

Here’s what Stephen had to say after the game:

On the game…

“It was a good experience for the lads. There were loads of aspects of the game that I really like, especially on the ball, but football isn’t all about being on the ball, it’s also about being off it as well in terms of tracking runners and making contact with more physical players.

“As Academy staff and me being the way I am, we will keep working with this group every day as I want them to learn quickly before the faster those lessons get through, the quicker the first-team opportunities may come.

On the lessons to be taken from the game…

“Hopefully the lads will take those lessons from this game as Chester were physical. I think we were really good on the ball and created some great chances but just couldn’t get that cutting edge in the final third.”

“Sometimes you don’t get what you deserve in football and that was the case today. We probably deserved a couple of goals, but it wasn’t to be today. Hopefully, on another day they will come, but as long as the lads learn from it, and quickly, I’ll be happy.”
