Wiles: We need to make sure we are difficult to beat

Interim head coach Simon Wiles spoke to the media ahead of his side's Sky Bet League One clash against Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium on Saturday.

Wiles' side have picked up two points from their last two outings against Wigan Athletic and Northampton Town, keeping clean sheets on both occasions. They will now be looking to try and go one better as they travel to Oxfordshire to face the in-from Yellows.

Here's what he had to say in his pre-match press conference:

On the current form…

“We are just going about our business; we know how Oxford plays and we need to make sure that we are difficult to beat and give ourselves the best platform to move forward and get the three points.

“That’s our mentality at the minute, we just need to make sure we start well, which we have been doing, but getting those early goals, and hopefully then will be the platform for us to go on a run and give us a chance to move up the table.

“As you have seen, if you can string two or three wins together, you give yourselves the best opportunity to move forward. You get in form, you build confidence, you get momentum, and all of a sudden, you can become the form team in the league.”

On the squad…

“We are monitoring the players after the niggles that they have picked up. Glenn [Whelan] is going to be a little bit longer, we have had some feedback from his scan so he will be out for a bit longer than expected.

“It looks like he will be out for about six weeks and will need rehabilitation after that so hopefully we can see him on the pitch again before the end of the season. It’s one we are gutted with, and so is he, so we just need to make sure we do the best we can for him to give him the best chance for an early return.

“As for Charlie [Mulgrew] and Sam [Finley] who came off on Tuesday, it’s the same message for them. We can see how they are over the next couple of days to see whether they will be available for selection on Saturday.”
