Grayson: We didn’t get the breaks we needed today

Head Coach Simon Grayson spoke to the media after his side narrowly lost to Plymouth Argyle at Home Park on Saturday.

Fleetwood had to fight throughout the game and the task was made much harder when the hosts took the lead through an own goal. Grayson’s men pressed well and replied with constant pressure and were unlucky not to find their way back into the game and take home a point.

Here’s what Simon has to say:

On the result…

“I think there were some good points in the game, it’s fine margins in any football match. Today we saw that as we went down one end and they get a real good clearance, which goes straight to the goalkeeper.

“They then down to the other end, put the ball into the box and it deflected onto Harrison Holgate and it’s an own goal. That’s the fine margins, from being so close to going in front at one end to then going one-nil down.

“They are a decent team, but we certainly competed against them and gave them a decent game and created lots of opportunities. They probably got the run of the ball at times around their box, but we just didn’t get the breaks we needed today.”

On the team’s performance…

“We competed well and moved the ball around, but it was, around the 18-yard box, at the end of the game, where the hardest part is scoring goals. We just didn’t have the composure, or the guile, to go and break them down.

“If we look at the game in detail, I would say that we didn’t have the composure needed to break their back five down. They had everyone back, including their midfield players, so we needed to be a bit cleverer, whether it was a striker playing a one-two or it was a cross picking someone out – we didn’t do that well enough.

“We are pleased with a lot of the aspects from the game, and you have to say that Plymouth are on a good run and, with the performance, we showed what we are capable of in this division.”
