Hat-trick hero Callum Morton spoke to the club after his goalscoring performance in Fleetwood Town’s 4-1 win over Leicester City Under-21s at Highbury on Tuesday evening.

Morton netted his first goal not long after the start with his right, then his second with his left at the end of the first half, and finally completed his hat-trick after the restart with his head to complete his hat-trick against the Foxes.

Here’s what Callum had to say:

On his hat-trick…

“This is the second senior hat-trick of my career with my first one coming when I was on loan at Braintree in the National League. Goals are something I’ve been looking for this season and luckily, I’ve managed to get three tonight. It was a good game for us and for me generally but hopefully, we’ll take this form into the league as well.

“For the first one, I anticipated the pass back to the keeper and managed to get there before, go round him, and get the shot away. I thought the keeper was going to come a bit further and have to take another touch, but when I saw the gap, I was able to pass it through and get the shot in.

“The second goal is something I’ve been working on, shooting with my left-foot and being comfortable to take those shots and be in those positions on my left-foot as well. Luckily, tonight it came off and long may that continue.

“I don’t score many headers so I was happy to get the third one. It was all about being in the right place at the right time for that one, which I’ve been working on and it’s something I want to do for us this season as a team. It was headed back across the goal well by DJ [Darnell Johnson] and I was able to get in the right position to nod it in.”

On his playing style…

“I’ve been playing off the left a bit so far this season and I’m comfortable playing there, but I think primarily, my favourite position is playing as a number nine with someone else. I’ve had different experiences at different clubs, some have worked, some probably not so much but playing down the middle is probably my favourite position.

“As long as I’m in the team and playing, that’s the main thing. In an ideal world, I’d like to play down the middle. The gaffer played with the two tonight and I think that’s what he wants to work towards, but when you’ve got players playing well in the team in certain positions, you go with what your best team is and I think the manager has found that out so far. The last three games have been good I think so long may it continue.”
