Head Coach Simon Grayson spoke to the press after his side fought valiantly in a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Lee Gregory scored the deciding goal when he poked home from close range after Dennis Adeniran’s shot was saved by Alex Cairns. However, Town put up a fight but despite creating numerous chances throughout the game weren’t able to score that crucial goal.

Here’s what Grayson had to say:

On the game…

“We’ve just said in the dressing room that we are so close to getting some big results and I’m really proud of the players tonight.

“They had a tough start because they were dominant, the crowd got behind them and they got that early goal, but we dug in and got to half time and created a few half chances. I’m so pleased with how they responded in the second half and how they passed the ball. We just didn’t quite get the breaks that you need to get the equaliser.

“In the second half we went to four at the back. We looked really good. The midfield passed it well, we created some good chances. Just around that 18-yard box where it really matters you’ve got to be slightly clever to break down the opposition as they have a tough defence. We rue our opportunities but I’m very proud of the players and what they’ve done tonight.”

On the atmosphere around the squad…

“We’re a young group, if you look at the players they have here on big money and with a lot of experience, our players will have certainly enjoyed this experience apart from the result.

“They’ll have learned from the experience and that’s all we keep saying to the players ‘Make sure that you learn from any game that you’re involved in’. It’s a tough season and we’ve had a tough start, but we’ve got a lot of belief in the dressing room that we’re not far away from starting our season.

“We’ve got young players that are developing and teams that have been near the bottom previously have found their way back into the division and had a successful season so as much as it hurts as and people will look and see that we’ve lost three league games, we’ve played really well and we’re not that far away from being a really good team and being very competitive.

“Ultimately, we keep going, work and the training ground and we’re not far away from getting that first victory of the season. It’s tough but we stick together and look to get a victory at the weekend.”
