Head Coach Simon Grayson spoke to the press after Fleetwood Town’s 3-2 win over Cheltenham Town on Saturday afternoon at Highbury Stadium.

After going a goal down, Town showed fighting spirit to turn the game around. Strikes from Tom Clarke, debutant Darnell Johnson and a last-minute winner from Shayden Morris were enough for the Cod Army to grab all three points.

Here’s what Grayson had to say:

On the game…

“It’s a relief to get a win. The performances have been really good recently, but we’ve not got the results whereas today was the complete opposite. We probably didn’t play as well as we can do but we took the three points and that makes me proud of the players.

“You want it all to be the perfect package in terms of three goals, good performance, and the previous games I keep going back to it but in some of those games we deserved to get two or three goals, but it hasn’t happened and sometimes you just have to accept that it’s your day and things drop for you.

“On another day that might have just dropped to their defender and Shayden [Morris] isn’t there to put it in the back of the net, so we’ll take it all day long and we’ll build and look forward to Plymouth, hopefully, this is the start of our season now.”

On the performance…

“We were clever [going forward] and it was great for Tom [Clarke] to get the goal that got us back into the game and we go 2-1 in front with DJ’s [Darnell Johnson] first goal which is not really what he’s in the team for but he had a steady debut today and, then we suffered the disappointment (of the equaliser), but then Shayden [Morris] pounced and got us the winner.

“The spirit has never been questioned because all week and the previous week, in all the meeting that we had we were talking about how positive we are and what we’re doing is the right things to be doing. The players were never that in doubt.

“This group have been all together and certainly positive in everything we’re looking to do and we got the reward today. The result is the most important thing given the run we’ve been on.”
