Defender James Hill spoke to the press after Fleetwood Town overcame Rochdale 1-0 at Highbury Stadium in Sky Bet League One on Saturday afternoon.
In a game which was a battle for the backline, but one that Hill and the defence dealt with the task at hand to earn another clean sheet ensured the Cod Army rode out winners thanks to an own goal from Eoghan O’Connell on a sunny afternoon on the Fylde Coast.
Here’s what he had to say:
On the match…
“It was a very good performance from the boys, we all had to grind until the very end where we managed to keep their attempt on goals out, it’s also nice to keep the clean sheets going so overall it was a great performance.
“Today we were disciplined out of possession without the ball, we kept our shape and put our bodies on the line, and we managed to put the ball in the back of the net, it’s the basics of football which we have managed to do really well today.”
“On the football pitch you can tell how close we are as a team, we’re all loving it and enjoying playing football again, it will put us in good stead for next season, we now know we approach every game like it’s the same and to focus on ourselves to not worry about the opposition.”
On the impressive defensive record…
“When we try to keep the goals out to get clean sheets, we have a better chance of winning the game, it’s then just up to the attackers to put the ball in the net, we just have to keep moving forward like the way we are.
“At the start of the season we were unsettled, and we weren’t getting points where we thought we deserved them, this season we have lost a few players to other clubs, but despite that our bond has stayed tight.
“Keeping clean sheets gives me great pride where I love making tackles and winning my headers, if I don’t win my headers or my tackles, I’ll go home disappointed, when we have been in the bottom half of the table we knew we had to keep fighting and the rewards would come.”
