Head coach Joey Barton spoke to the media after Fleetwood Town put up a good fight against Premier League side Everton at Highbury in the Carabao Cup.
Barton watched on as his side battled hard against a top-level side from the touchline, with all his players making him proud after the performance they put into the cup tie at Highbury.
Joey spoke after the game and here is what he had to say:
On the game…
“I challenged the lads at half-time and said that we had been a bit to respectful of them. They picked a strong side, they are good players and if you let them play, they will show you that. So, I challenged them, I said that you aren’t here to swap jerseys at the end, we are in a cup tie here and we can rattle a few cages and get amongst them.
“I thought the lads we superb in the second half of the cup tie, they got us back in it, made a game of it, and the score line probably flatters them at the end.
“We tried to contain and hold the fort, in an attempt to make them frustrated and then we looked to add a bit of energy when we changed our system. It’s a great learning lesson, I thought the young lads acquitted themselves really well at times, tried to play some football which was pleasing and we’ll be better for that experience.”
On Callum Camps…
“He [Callum Camps] is looking like the free transfer of the summer - maybe second to James Rodriguez, but Campsy and Rodriguez are looking like good bits of business!
“He’s pleased all of us because we made a big play to get him here, there was lots of other clubs sniffing round him and we felt we could show hm how he could perform better.
“He’s got four goals already and he’s hit the ground running and long may it continue. I was talking to him about getting maybe ten goals from midfield but I’m now hoping he gets 40!”
