Defender Sam Stubbs spoke to the club after signing a two-year deal and revealed that he is ‘over the moon’ to have signed for the Cod Army.
The 21-year-old joined Fleetwood from Sky Bet Championship side Middlesbrough on Wednesday and brings experience from the Scottish Premiership, Eredivisie, League One, and League Two with him.
After signing his new deal, here is what he had to say:
On the move…
“I’m over the moon – really happy! It’s a club that I’ve known about, because of the Liverpool connection, for a while, and they did really well last year. I feel like it’s a good fit for me, and vice-versa, and I just can’t wait to get going.
“It’s nice to have someone like the Gaffer, with his name and stature, to put faith in you and back you. It’s good but now it’s time to repay the favour and perform to my best abilities on the pitch.
“Whenever you move to a club, you’ve always got something to prove. In football, you are always under question and it’s important that I show consistency in my game and try to hit the ground running.”
On why he chose Fleetwood…
“There’s a lot that drew me towards Fleetwood. Having the gaffer and that Liverpool connection speaks for themselves. The stadium, facilities, players and how well they did last year are all reasons why I made the move.
“I like the philosophy of the club, as it’s all about hard work, you are in it together and you play football the right way.
“They want to win football games and they have proved that they can do that. There’s so much that drew me to Fleetwood, and I feel privileged to be here.”
On the squad…
“They’ve all been good with me, the Liverpool connection has helped in terms of staff and players. I know [Mark] Duffy so he helped me on the first day with all the names, I’m still not there yet, but they all seem to be brilliant.
“Obviously there is a time and place to have a laugh and joke, but in training, the lads are on it and you can tell that they all play for each other and help everyone out. They all seem to have a really good bond between them and they have been great with me.”
