Fleetwood Town Wrens Ladies continued their unbeaten streak as they shared the points with Merseyrail Ladies after a 2-2 draw on Sunday at Poolfoot Farm.

Dave Butler’s side started out the better, and almost took the lead straight away in the game as they found themselves one-on-one with the opposition goalkeeper on two occasions, but they were unable to convert either chance.

Fleetwood’s defence was stern in the opening stages but let the Merseyrail attackers through just after the two gilt-edged chances and the visitors managed to take the lead by firing past the Town goalkeeper.

Town went back on the attack and five minutes before the half, a through ball was played to Abby Fenton, who was brought down in the Merseyrail box, which led to a penalty that Lauren Oatley converted.

Just before the break, a bit of misfortune struck Fleetwood as a strike from near the halfway line, which was assisted by the wind on the day, flew over the Town keeper, and restored the visitor’s lead.

Butler had a team talk at half-time and changed the tactics, which benefited the side in the second half as they controlled possession and created multiple chances which forced the opposition’s keeper into some great diving saves.

With time running out, Fleetwood had time for one last attack which saw the goalkeeper pull off another brilliant save but could only parry the ball to the feet of Rebecca Lord who placed the ball into the back of the net, making it 2-2.
