FLEETWOOD TOWN

Fleetwood Town are looking to build on their 2-0 win over Gillingham on Saturday, as the side have now won one drawn one and lost on in their last three league fixtures.

The Cod Army made the long trip down to the south coast on Saturday to face Steve Evans’ Gillingham on Saturday, and they managed to come away victors after goals from Paddy Madden and Ched Evans secured the points on the day.

In the game before, Town fought against Accrington for 90 minutes, creating multiple gilt-edged chances but weren’t able to find the back of the net on the night. The deciding goal was scored by Stanley in the second half as Dion Charles converted a Michael Nottingham long-throw.

SHREWSBURY TOWN

Shrewsbury haven’t had the start to the season that they would have wanted as they currently sit in 20th after seven games.

The Shrews’ latest fixture was a home tie against Rochdale, which they lost 2-1 after two first half goals from Oliver Rathbone and Alex Newby settled the tie, even with Aaron Pierre’s goal on the stroke of half-time.

Before that, Shrewsbury had another home clash with Bristol Rovers, which finished 1-0 to the visiting side, but were on the other side of the results the week before as a 90th minute goal from Leon Clarke secured all three points against AFC Wimbledon.

PRE-MATCH QUOTES – JOEY BARTON

Head coach Joey Barton spoke to the media ahead of his side’s clash against Shrewsbury Town at Poolfoot Farm on Monday afternoon. He had this to say:

“We know Shrewsbury are going to be good. They’ve gone away from that back three that they were playing the majority of last season and have some good players in Ollie Norburn, Josh Vela, and obviously Leon Clarke going in there.

“I’ve seen that Charlie Daniels has a really good delivery, which will make them a threat from set plays so we should be well versed in that after playing against Steve Evans and Gillingham who test you at every dead ball opportunity.

“We’ll see what they turn up like and see what they have on offer. We have enough quality in our team to take away from most teams and what they want to do. Once you take away plan A, you see what plans they have in store.”

ONE TO WATCH – CHARLIE DANIELS

One to watch from Gillingham is defender, Charlie Daniels. The 34-year-old joined the Shrews on a free transfer on Friday and was thrown into the squad a day later for their league fixture against Rochdale.

Daniels started his professional career at Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, where he was sent out to Chesterfield, Leyton Orient, and Gillingham on loan to gain valuable experience. The defender then moved permanently to Leyton and managed to make 117 appearances in just three years at the club.

Whilst at The O’s, he went on loan to Bournemouth and then made the move permanent in 2012. Daniels played a part in the side’s rise up the footballing pyramid, as he joined them in League One, playing 34 games in their promotion season to the Championship, and made 42 appearances in the Championship promotion season.

The defender kept his spot in the side and went on to make 129 Premier League appearances across five seasons, before an injury ruled him out for the rest of the 2019/20 season.
