Midfielder Jay Matete spoke to the press after Fleetwood Town overcame Sky Bet League One opponents Gillingham 2-0 at the Priestfield Stadium.

Matete – who came back into the starting line-up in the game against Gillingham - played his part in a valiant midfield performance as they managed to create multiple chances throughout the game, with two of them leading to goals from Paddy Madden and Ched Evans.

After the game, here is what Jay had to say:

On the result...

“It was a really good result; and it was also a tough game to be fair. It was a physical game and the lads dealt with it well.

“It was a great three points as it’s not easy to come away with three points from here, but we were mentally and physically strong and we won all of our battles.

“I’m glad we got the win and it’s going to be good to be good to get back to Highbury where we can push on.”

On his individual performance…

“I thought I played well today and hopefully it’s enough to stake a claim for the gaffer to play me next game as we look to push on as a team.

“We’re competing every day in training, no one is taking a day off and all the players have to be on it every week because of the competition.

“It was a bit different today against Gillingham. we had to deal with the things thrown in our way, roll our sleeves up, and keep battling, just like it’s a battle every day.

“The way I see it is we have a good squad, now we have got our first away win it’s really important as we’re all wanting to kick on and to get a string of wins together."
