FLEETWOOD TOWN
Fleetwood rose to 8th position in Sky Bet League One after their 4-1 win over Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium last Saturday.
Callum Camps opened the scoring early on with a barnstorming free-kick from range, with Paddy Madden doubling the sides lead just before the half, beating Jordi van Stappershoef in the process. Josh Grant pulled one back for the home side, but it wasn’t enough to forge a comeback for The Gas.
Before that, Town finished their Papa John’s Trophy group stage with a perfect record as they managed to beat Sunderland 2-1 at Highbury Stadium on Tuesday evening. The Cod Army came back from one down to beat the Black Cats as goals from Barrie McKay and Mark Duffy overshadowed Callum McFadzean’s opener.
PLYMOUTH ARGYLE
Argyle head to Highbury on Saturday on a six-game unbeaten streak, with their latest game being a 2-2 draw against Portsmouth.
Plymouth went ahead early on in the game after Sean Raggett, unfortunately, put the ball into his own net in the 11th minute. The score stayed the same until the half before Pompey turned the game around with two goals in just three minutes. Ryan Lowe’s side secured the point with twelve minutes to go as Jerome Opoku placed the ball past Craig MacGillivray.
Almost a week before that, Plymouth finished out their Papa John’s Trophy group with a 3-1 win over Newport County at Home Park. Goals from Ben Reeves, George Cooper, and an own goal from Joe Woodiwiss saw them go three up on the night, with Padraig Amond’s 64th minute goals proving to just be a consolation.
PRE-MATCH QUOTES – JOEY BARTON
Head coach Joey Barton spoke to the press ahead of his side’s Sky Bet League One clash against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday. He had this to say:
“They’ve built a good side there, I think Ryan’s [Lowe] has done a good job at Bury, getting them promoted before what happened there and then he headed to Plymouth and got them promoted at the first time of asking there.
“They have come into this division riding the crest of a wave. Seeing their game against Portsmouth on the telly the other night, they are no mugs, they are organised, well-coached and well drilled.
“If we aren’t on the ball and bang at it, they will fancy their chances. They’re level on points with us with a game in hand, where most of their games have been at home. They’ve been good there but are probably waiting for their away record to improve.
“They’re coming to a tough place for any team in our division to come to and Saturday is our opportunity again, after a couple of away games, to get back to business at home like we did against Sunderland in the Papa John’s Trophy.”
ONE TO WATCH – LUKE JEPHCOTT
One to watch from Plymouth Argyle will be midfielder Luke Jephcott. The 20-year-old has started out the season in a prolific fashion as he is currently the Plymouth top scorer with six goals in all competitions.
Jephcott came through the youth ranks at Argyle and managed to make his first-team debut in October 2018, in a 3-2 home loss to Burton Albion. He would go on to make ten appearances in his first season but had to wait until January 2020 for his first goals.
Like London buses, they came all together as he scored four goals in two games at the start of the year, bagging braces against both Scunthorpe United and Carlisle United. Since that spell, the midfielder has scored nine goals in just 21 appearances.
