Fleetwood Town's new signing Glenn Whelan spoke to the club after putting pen to paper to a deal until the end of the 2019/20 season.

Whelan joins Fleetwood as the club’s third signing in the January Transfer Window, and could be in contention to make his debut on Saturday afternoon away at Bristol Rovers.

The Irish international brings a wealth of experience to Joey Barton’s side with a nine year spell at Stoke City, and over 12 years playing for his national side, with 91 appearances to his name.

Here is what he had to say…

On the move to Fleetwood…

“I got a call from the manager and he wanted me to come in and train with the squad and also take a look at me. I have enjoyed the few days I have been training with the squad and I am just glad that the move has now been sorted.

“It’s a good group here, but it’s always hard joining as new group as it is like the first day at school when you go in, but knowing two of the lads here has made it easier. Everything has been fine and I just look forward to get going.”

On what he will bring to the squad...

“I have been around a long time and that comes with a lot of experience. As a player I have got out of this year and I know what it takes to do that. It’s a tough league, but Fleetwood have done well so far this season and if we can get a few results under our belt, it will give us a good push.”

On 2020 and the year ahead…

“When I spoke to the Gaffer [Joey Barton], he is so ambitious and wants to go and achieve something this season and for me I know I need to play well as if I don’t, then I have no chance for my internationals coming up so even though it’s March when matches come, it’s about playing and staying fit.”
