Fleetwood Town under 23’s were held to a goalless draw against Morecambe at Poolfoot Farm on Tuesday afternoon, and are now unable to qualify for the next round of the Central League Cup.

Stephen Crainey’s side created the majority of the chances in the game but were unable to break the deadlock in their third Central League Cup game of the season.

Fleetwood had the first clear chance of the game, which was a counter attack that saw Harvey Saunders receive the ball on the wing, cut inside but fired his shot wide of the near post.

There would be an even better chance for the hosts ten minutes later, as another counter attack saw the ball moved wide again, this time Saunders played the ball in low to Ged Garner, who couldn’t find the finishing touch.

Morecambe’s only chance of the half came late on, as a diving header in the box meant Fleetwood keeper James Cottam had to make a great save low to his left.

The second half started like the first, but midway through the half, some neat play in midfield saw the ball played into Daniel Mooney, who put his shot just wide of the target for the hosts.

With 20 minutes to go, Dylan Boyle came on to replace Barry Baggley, and it wasn’t long before he had an impact. Soon after coming on, the ball fell to him on the edge of the Morecambe area, but his shot went over.

Fleetwood continued to play on the front foot with Saunders and Jay Matete both creating chances but failing to trouble the Morecambe goalkeeper from close range.

Morecambe tried to make chances on the counter attack but were unable to cause too many issues for the Fleetwood defence.

Town’s best chance came in the dying minutes of the game as Mooney found himself one on one with the keeper, only for his side-footed shot to go agonisingly wide of the post.

The Cod Army tried to force one more chance late on as James Hill launched a throw into the box however it was cleared, before the full-time whistle sounded.

Fleetwood still have a game against Carlisle United in the competition, who currently sit top of the group after beating Blackpool 3-0 in their last cup fixture.

Fleetwood XI: Cottam (GK), Southam-Hales, Hill, Holgate, Rydel, Matete, Smith, Baggley, Mooney, Saunders, Garner.

Subs: Czajor (GK), Fowler, Boyle, Johnston, Trialist.
