Fleetwood Town’s Under 18s progressed to the semi-final of the Youth Alliance Cup Northern Section on Saturday, after beating Grimsby Town 2-1 at Poolfoot Farm.

Simon Wiles’ side started the game looking the better team as they were able to control the speed of play, and even create chances for both Carl Johnston and Jamie Cooke.

Fleetwood continued to press, which led to them finding the breakthrough halfway through the first half as Shayden Morris picked the ball up in the midfield and struck past the goalkeeper from 20-yards.

The young Cods doubled their lead just before half-time through Kian Makepeace. The forward capitalised on a defensive mistake, and after holding off two defenders, he struck the ball into the back of the net.

Grimsby halved the deficit soon after the half-time break, after Sam Barratt was caught in possession.

Fleetwood ended the game well, with Joe Collins forcing the Grimsby goalkeeper into multiple saves, and played out the result, meaning they secured their spot in the next round of the cup.

The Under 18s are now in the draw for the Youth Alliance Cup Semi-final Northern Section, alongside Preston North End, Rotherham United and Shrewsbury Town.
