Fleetwood Town’s Development Squad came away 2-1 winners in their Central League Cup tie against Carlisle United on Tuesday afternoon.

Stephen Crainey’s side led the game twice in Penrith, with both of the goals coming from forward Harvey Saunders.

Fleetwood took the lead with the first real chance of the game when Laurence Smith took a quick free-kick inside Town’s half, passing the ball to Ged Garner. He then lobbed the ball into Saunders - who found the net with a volley from a tight angle.

Carlisle equalised in the 28th minute, as Olufela Olomola laid the ball off to Omari Patrick, who then struck the ball past Billy Crellin from range.

The Cod Army continued to press until half-time, and Saunders was denied after Hunt blocked his diving header with a goal line clearance.

Fleetwood continued to press early in the second half as Crellin kicked deep into the Carlisle half. Hunt was there again to make a last-ditch tackle to deny Saunders his second of the match.

After some great play from Garner, which saw him dribble around three defenders before laying the ball off to Baggley, the midfielder could only see the Northern Ireland international strike the crossbar with his curled effort from 20-yards.

With less than 20 minutes left in the game, Saunders gave Fleetwood the lead for the second time in the game. The forward managed to get on the end of a brilliant through ball, and produced a finish like his first one, again being from a tight angle.

The Development Squad are next in action on Tuesday 3 March, as they are set to play a Central League fixture against Tranmere Rovers at Poolfoot Farm, in a 1pm kick-off.
