Fleetwood Town defender Peter Clarke spoke following his first goal for the club, which won all three points for his side in the 2-1 win over Oxford United.

The 37-year-old scored the winner at Highbury after Lewie Coyle’s out-swinging cross, and the all important header meant Joey Barton's side keep their unbeaten run on home soil going in the 2019/20 campaign.

Paddy Madden opened the scoring on Saturday with a close range effort, with Elliot Moore equalizing for the visitors just before the break. A win - Town's third at home this season - sees Town now sit 4th in the Sky Bet League One table.

Here is what Peter Clarke had to say:

On his goal…

“It was nice to score, I know strikers love it and thrive off it, but when ever you play it’s always great to get on the scoresheet when you can. The fact that it is the winner, it’s great and I hope plenty of people have gone away from here happy after the result.

“For the goal I went up for a set-piece and when they partially cleared it, we kept the ball alive and with the second phase it has gone out to Lewie [Coyle], and he has put a good ball into the box and I’ve timed the header and it ended up in the back of the net.”

On the sides performance…

“As a team we are delighted with the win, but on the other side we are disappointed that we conceded and I am sure those errors will be ironed out on Monday when we see it all back. I thought today wasn’t our most fluent of performances, and probably not our best performance of the season to date, but we managed to keep going and keep creating opportunities, the goal that came was credit to ourselves.

“We have a group here who are hungry and want to do well. This group show their true colours when the time get tough, and this afternoon was another example of that. Every team in this division will have spells, have possession and create chances, and today we dealt with them well and from that, we gave ourselves opportunities to go down the other end and score.”

On the home record this season…

“We have a decent record we have here in terms of the results we’ve picked up. It is something we want to maintain going forward and keep going. Sometimes the fans help get the players get going, but also it can work the other way round, and today the fans were terrific. They were behind us all the way which is a huge credit.”
