After chances fell for both sides, it was left to Ched Evans to head home from Ash Hunter’s in-swinging cross to give Joey Barton and his side all three points.

Town opened their Leasing.com Trophy campaign with a defeat away at Lancashire rivals Accrington Stanley. John Coleman’s side took the lead in the second half and doubled their later moments later. Paddy Madden converted from the penalty spot – however it wasn’t enough to share the points at the Wham Stadium.
